In October 2013, after an drastic increase in opiate overdose deaths in our area, the BCCS prevention department began to offer Overdose Prevention and Rescue Training to clients, and others with a vested interest in the training. We are excited to offer our overdose prevention training through our Delaware Overdose Survival Education (DOSE) Program this Sat***ay 10/25 at Passport to Awareness, an event sponsored and hosted by the News Journal and AtTAcK Addiction. The event is at Brandywine Springs School and starts at 9am and the training begins at 1pm. The training will be the first where Naloxone will be available to attendees. The training is free and the medication is $50.00. There will be provisions made for those who can not afford the medication. If you or anyone you know will benefit from the training please pass along the info. #bccs #dose #naloxone #savinglives #atTAcKaddiction #awareness

BCCS to offer New Statewide Mobile Medical Outreach Program WILMINGTON, DE (December 26, 2014)– Brandywine Counseling and Community Services Inc. was recently awarded a four-year Federal SAMHSA grant through the Minority AIDS Initiative Continuum of Care Pilot to provide Integration of HIV Prevention and Medical Care into Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment Programs for Racial/Ethnic Minority Populations at High Risk for Behavioral Health Disorders and HIV. BCCS is excited to announce a new program funded under this grant called COPE (Community Outreach and Prevention Education) which will be offered Statewide with services being provided in all three counties. The COPE Program will utilize an RV to offer community based services related to prevention and education, as well as identification, recruitment and retention into an integrated care system. The interventions that will be performed are: outreach, education, testing, referral, wrap-around services and care coordination. The COPE Program will offer a full medical assessment and integrated care model through the use of a community-based team with specialized training in working with a difficult to reach population. The COPE team will consist of a Community Based Nurse, Medical Case Managers, and Community Wellness Advocates. The COPE team will conduct wellness and behavioral health screenings in the community including diabetes, hypertension, vision, nutrition, HIV, TB, and Hepatitis screening and testing. The COPE Program will also offer Hepatitis vaccinations and will assist individuals with linkage to all necessary services identified in order to provide a plethora of integrated and wrap around services. “BCCS is proud to be able to support our ongoing outreach efforts by making the COPE Program available to residents Statewide. Oftentimes there are multiple barriers to seeking medical screenings, and linkage to care, especially in the more rural areas of the State” said Dr. Lynn Fahey, CEO of BCCS. Domenica Personti, Director of Adolescent Services and Prevention at BCCS, said the COPE Program will enable the organization to reach even more people who truly need the services it provides. “We will be able to create additional community outreach sites, and provide a greater depth of services in a time of great need.” One of the most important services provided on the van is care coordination such as linking people to needed community based services, including those offered by BCCS and other community health centers, and behavioral health providers. In addition, individuals will be connected to a community wellness advocate to assist them in navigating the healthcare system. The COPE Program will provide services to those who are insured, uninsured, and or underinsured. For more information on COPE or about BCCS programs and services, call 302-5045920 or go to www.brandywinecounseling.org.

Update: I followed through with my plan to stay with BCCS for one year. In october I started to detox off the methadone, and I took my last dose a week before christmas. I was sick for a couple days and sleeping was only a thought. But I suffered through it and I am doing fine now. Sleeping is not 100% but it's something I can deal with. Life is so much better without using heroin or any other substance that will only bring you down. Still working and taking care of mom and dealing with life's ups and downs. Thank you again, and also Meredith who was my counselor. It can be done.
