For seven straight years, the ROTC at Albertville High School have visited the Birmingham VA Medical Center as part of their service learning project. The students were given the opportunity to visit with hospitalized Veterans, and learn about Medical Center operations. The groups were able to visit the Blind Rehab Center, the Gold Clinic and all of the inpatient floors. They were privileged to meet and talk with several Veterans. Quite a lot was accomplished in a short time. Thank you to this group for never forgeting what a special population our Veterans are!

Congratulations, to our March Five Star Service Award winners! The Five Star Service Award is a way to recognize team members who Veterans, their family members, or supervisors have noticed going above and beyond. Congratulations to Toni Hosea, RN, as the first Recipient of the Daisy Award at the Birmingham VA Medical Center Toni was selected from over 50 DAISY nominations. These nominations came from Birmingham VA Medical Center Veterans., The Veteran that nominated Ms. Hosea explained that in late September 2014, his course of treatment reached an impasse that was significant enough to make him, for the first time, begin to give up . At that point,Toni stepped in. As an experienced member of the medical center’s IV team, Toni assured the Veteran that she would make the necessary repairs and fix the problem permanently. He described Toni’s soft tone and reassurance that that there was nothing to be worried about, which went a long way to restore his faith and put him at ease. Birmingham VA Medical Center added 9 photos.

Congratulations to Joshua Hayes, the latest recipent of the Daisy Award! Josh is a 6B staff nurse. The following is an exerpt of the nomination written about Josh: “Josh is one of those people that makes you smile whenever you see him. He also was the “best medicine”—laughter. How often can a patient say they had a good time while being in the hospital? He spends time with you, not rushing off, explains anything you don’t understand, and tells a little story that makes you feel like you’re his only patient. I can’t remember laughing so much, especially at a time when I was worried and nervous about my situation. If I ever have to be admitted again, I truly hope that I’ll be lucky enough to have Josh as my nurse. It was a real pleasure.” Birmingham VA Medical Center added 3 new photos.

March is National Nutrition Month. An easy way to eat healthier is to fill at least half your plate with plants and aim to eat 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Evidence shows that a high consumption of plant-based foods reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
